Reflection on Week 1: Consumption, Consumer Values, and Sejahtera Framework

In general there are five subtopics that are covered in this chapter, which are Existing Consumption Framework, Existing Consumer Value, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production Framework, and Sejahtera Framework.

Under the Existing Consumption Framework, we learn about the meaning of consumption as well as flow of linear economy and circular economy. Consumption itself means the process that converts time and goods, services, or ideas into value. In linear economy we know about the production and consumption flow such as logistics, analysis, design, and many other. While in circular economy we learn about how are used products can be reproduced and/or reused. Furthermore, it also shows how does consumption processes are demand-driven, which are divided into customers’ perspective and marketers’ perspective.

Under the Existing Consumer Value Framework, we learn about there are two values that appear in market which are hedonic value and utilitarian value. Hedonic value is defined as that value a customer receives based on the subject experience of fun and playfulness while utilitarian value defined as a value that customer receives based on task- related and rational consumption behavior, functional, cognitive, and a means to an end. These values are driven by several factors which are internal influences, consumption process, relationship quality, and external influences.

If we look at the definition of hedonism, then actually hedonism itself can lead us to wasting wealth, which is forbidden by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala in Surah Al-Isra, He said "And do not squander (your wealth) extravagantly. Verily, the spenders are the brothers of Satan." (Surah Al-Israa ': 26-27). Therefore, we should not consume something just because of our lust so that we waste our wealth because later we will be classified as Satan's brothers.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 global noble goals that were set up by United Nation General Assembly on 2015. Previously United Nation created Millennium Global Goals (MDGs) that only consist of 8 global goals which has been ran from 2000 to 2015. The difference between these two missions are quite a lot, where MDGs theme were about poverty while SDGs theme are about sustainable goals, MDGs were also targeted to developing countries while SDGs are targeted universally, MDGs itself also only have 8 goals, 21 targets, and 60 indicators, while SDGs have 17 goals, 169 targets, and 304 indicators.

Uniquely, under SDGs there is one goal that covers about consumerism, it is located in SDG number 12 which is Ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns. This SDG basically covers how is good consumerism should be preserve and remain sustain. Several issues that are covered are The Global “Material Footprint”, Electronic Waste, and many more.

Lastly, under the Sejahtera Academic Framework, IIUM tries to interpret humanizing education in the post-pandemic and post-materialistic era.

Komentar

  1. Choosing between living a consumerist life between hedonistic and utilitarian is a difficult thing, because at that time we also wanted to enjoy life with the money we had, but it's really a good idea to put a budgeting scale on our expenses and live simply without being too extravagant.

Reflection on Week 2: Integrating the Sejahtera Framework, Sustainable Development and Maqasid alShariah into Customer Awareness

In general there are four subtopics that are covered in this chapter, which are levels of customer awareness, consumer awareness advocacy, consumer intelligence, consumer awareness with Sejahtera Framework. Basically consumer awareness is an understanding or an act where consumer can delivers the information about the products, goods, services, and consumer rights. By having a good consumer awareness means that we have a good understanding about the goods or services that we used either its benefits or its disadvantage, so at the end we can have the right decision when we choose or apply the product. There are 5 stages of consumer awareness, which are unaware, problem aware, solution aware, product aware, most aware. In an era when many people are vying to be rich with the various products or services they sell, it is very important for us as ordinary people who are their target market to have awareness of the products or services they offer. Reflection on Week 8: Models of Consumer Policy

Consumer policy is a policy that regulates all things about consumerism, both in terms of consumer goods and capital goods. Some of the things discussed were consumer rights, responsibilities of producers and sellers, and all things that are indeed regulated so that the market can run well so that the health, safety and welfare of the community can be guaranteed. Everything related to consumer policy must relate to stakeholders, especially the government which regulates state laws. Anything that is regulated by the state is certainly in the form of intervention to various parties, be it companies or consumers, but that is law, which means to force or suppress, this is done to anticipate unwanted things such as marketplace abuses, market failures, unsafe products or services, and others. For example, in Indonesia, the trade government has decided not to allow anyone to buy luxury goods abroad, and if they buy luxury goods from abroad, they are required to pay excise duty and taxes up...
